What Is The Best Kind Of Product To Create?

by Joel on February 21, 2010

This week I’ll be posting a video on my blog about what I feel is the best type of product you can create to market online.

Before I post it, I’d like to get your opinion and feedback on what makes a good online “Product”

I’ll share some of these results in my video.

Just type a comment below and watch your email or my blog in the next few days.

The best product to create is one with a built in demand and limited supply. It can be in any one of thousands of niches since for almost everything made their are customers!

The most important step in product creation is identifying a strong market of buyers or end users. Training for this can be a product in itself. Once a market has been determined, a wide range of product line (both physical as well as digital format) would give the marketer and product creator greatest flexibility. If it can be coupled with either residual income or continuity, sustainability of the business would be maximized.

Joel,

First, the webinar with Greg Cesar was awesome. Thanks for introducing him to us.

Next, I think software is one of the best products to create. I especially like software that is backed up with videos on how to use it most effectively.

Maybe throw a PDF in there with transcripts as people seem to like the option to read the instructions also.

Thanks for your excellent content and webinars. You’re one of the few marketers that I am still signed up to as I know you always deliver excellent information. Take care and I look forward to your future content. Patrick

Hey Joel,

Basically, I think that the ultimate product would be what Keyword Rockstar is going to be.

Once the campaign generation will allow for full banner customization, it will be exactly what I need.

Basically what Keyword Rockstar is now with a bunch of banner design functionality. As much banner functionality and flexibility as possible. That is the real reason that I shelled out the thousand bucks was for the ability to quickly generate different banner ads and not have to design them in a separate banner generator.

I would also really like it if I could create my own banner templates that KR could auto generate into. Basically make my own graphics and have KR insert the text into different fields. Hopefully, this is coming. If I could do this, it would make testing little things much easier.

Also, if you could look at other banner networks that just the three search engines.

For instance if you want to place banners for a certain niche, the perfect software would be able to find that across multiple platforms. I know that there is probably some programming issues with that.

Yes, Joel, I watched the replay and found it very informative. Greg is awesome! However, I’ll bet for most of your audience it went pretty much right over their heads – including mine. Why? We don’t even know the mechanics of getting started. Sure, landing pages and such are important, but we don’t know how to physically implement this stuff.

Here’s an example: I read earlier this morning a Guru stating he was amazed that his students didn’t even have a domain set up. Well, that’s not surprising to me, because I don’t either. I’m working on a tight budget, and before I spend money on a domain name, hosting, and whatever else is basic, I need to know how much more money I’m going to have to lay out to even qualify to get into the IM game. Maybe I can’t afford to “get into the game.”

These very basic mechanics are glossed over and many of us are scratching our heads wondering what we do with a landing page – get another domain name? Get hosting set up again? If domain names are supposed to reflect our keywords, do we have to spend more money and create more sites as we go along? What happens to the old domains and sites? Is there a junk yard for them? Does it become space refuse?

These basics are very sketchy in my mind, and an explanation of this kind of getting-started stuff is very necessary to be able to relate to all of the other stuff that you talk about. You expect a 1st grade level of understanding the basics, but many of us are in Kindergarten, or perhaps even pre-school when it comes to implementation.

A whole course isn’t necessary, but maybe a flow-chart would help tie level 0 to level 1 so we can move forward into this exciting and profitable world.

I’m sorry I didn’t address your question, but I can’t think that far ahead at this point.

I would be interested in creating a multimedia training course. It could be delivered online (digital download), and it could also be made available on DVD for those who are less computer-literate or simply prefer a physical product (the DVD version would be priced higher to encourage more digital sales). Also, during the purchase process, there would be an upsell option to a continuity product such as a membership or subscription service.

7 walter daniels February 21, 2010 at 12:04 pm

I would consider it a product that provides big site function, to small companies. Membergate is a nice idea, but it;s really pitched at big companies. There are hundreds of small company sites that need the same functionality as the NYT, but no one wants to see it.

8 Brian Garvin February 21, 2010 at 1:20 pm

I think a great product would be to make a DVD-ROM outside of the IM Niche that would prove very useful to people and would solve their problems. Then add continuity and create a new DVD each month and send it to each member.

And even if you don’t go the continuity route, at least create a few solid upsells with escalating price points. For example, make the first product $97.00. Then make the 2nd product $167.00. Then pitch the big product with all the fancy frills last and price that at $247.00.

This will allow you to spend a lot more for clicks and still be in profit even if your clicks are somewhat light on initial product conversions.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Joel, I’m not smart enough to suggest anything. Wish I could do all of that. If I was to suggest a product it certainly would be e-books or mail order. I may be way out of line here, but I’m sure trying. I’ll take all of the help I can get. Thanks, Sue WaLL

Hi Joel,

The webinar with Greg Cesar was one of the most
information packed I have heard in a long time!

I think a software product with video training would be a great product.

Also on a side note I was disappointed to see that neither you or Greg ofer an option to pay thru Paypal. After having dealt with credit card
fraud that is the only way I pay online. Would have loved to taken either yours or Greg’s course.

Hi Joel,
My name is Steve Fisher and I am a disabled entrepreneur from Independence, Mo. I have had several brain surgeries for a tumor. Concequensly, I use a wheelchair. After years of searching, I ran across this revolutionary [EDIT - Hey Steve I don't want anyone to steal your niche idea so I edited this part out.] This is a niche I would like to work with, but is it a bullet-proof niche?

*** Note from Joel – Hey Steve if people are spending money on it and you can get an audience to listen, it may be a good niche. Thanks for sharing.

I also happen to be a certified child/adolescent psychiatrist, only because one of best friends from our undergrad days at Yale and then med school years at Harvard created an inseparable bond – and he had raised 2 million to open a mental health clinic for homeless/wondering youth. He hired his staff, signed a lease in an area many of his target population seemed to hang out. He had been encouraged to apply for a grant from the City on Youth Initiatives, which was awarded six months later in the amount of $1.75 million. Unbeknownst to him, it stipulated the pay grades for a psychiatrist with 1-5 years experiences, etc. After some legal ploys, and political rifts, almost the entire staff regrettably had to quit, as most of the doctors would have been taking 60-70% cuts. I have a very specific niche, but I’d like to create physical and digital products for a membership site.

15 John Woodfield February 21, 2010 at 10:27 pm

I’d go for subscriptions or some kind of membership in a niche you actually have some interest in.
I like to create software, but you usually end up with a lot more of support than you imagine from the beginning.

On the other hand, if you are a programmer and can find a partner, small problem solving applications can really make some money.

Best online product to create is one that leads to ongoing income and lots of backend opportunities. If at all possible it would be difficult to replicate (no sense going to all that trouble and then having copycats erode your hard work).

Personally, as a consumer I dislike ebooks, and I hate videos. Videos you have to sit and watch and they suck time. It is getting to the point that if I can’t tell how long a video is, I don’t bother to watch – how rude to assume I’m gonna sit through what turns out to be a 30min pitch! Also I can’t scan for information like I can with text. Ebooks clutter your files. So I’d lean towards creating a private forum that I can search for exclusive information with experts in one area on board. Hard to replicate (experts sign exclusivity deal).

How to find best ways to setup and start a “Membership Site” by choosing a relatively simple and low cost interface.

18 KC Tasker February 21, 2010 at 11:36 pm

Okay now for another solution…..

How to setup and start your first “Membership Site” in relatively simple and low cost ways to assist training a group of “IM’s.”

19 Branko Zecevic February 22, 2010 at 4:08 am

Hi Joel!
I think the best product would be a combination of video, report or ebook, software and membership site.
Of course the best solution is to have your own product incorporated in continuity system. Another good idea is to include some affiliate products as a bonuses in your offer.
I’m interested in your opinion about my free offer
at http://www.howtocreateproduct.com and I would like to hear from you some advices or tips about how to improve my offer!
Cheers!

20 Miguel Arca February 22, 2010 at 7:56 am

Hi Joel. Tks for the preocupation and the invitation as well.

Personally, I’m interested in devoloping all kinds of products:

Online Video, E-books, CD/DVD Training, SWTools,
Membership Sites.

As a matter of fact, some of them do exist already, so maybe it would be more a matter
of reviewing them in general and the general strategy in particular.

Also interested in Automated mailing and control of responses and the detailed steps for the organization of a Webinar.

I don´t know if I’m asking too much.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Regards.

A non intimidating info product geared toward the Baby Boom generation with the nuts & bolts of getting started making money with on-line marketing.

25 Memory June 2, 2010 at 4:54 pm

The best type of product is one that solves a problem. People go online to find solutions to their problems,be it traffic,or information. If you can come up with a solution to that problem, you have a great product in the making.
